Tracey Enerson Wood on Katherine Wright: The Sister Who Changed Aviation

I recorded this interview back in June—before I decided to move forward with my women in aviation history textbook project. Since then, Katharine Wright has found her way into my own work: she has a short sidebar in Chapter One of my book.

In this conversation, I talk with bestselling author Tracey Enerson Wood about her 2024 historical novel Katharine, which brings to life the story of Katharine Wright—the little-known younger sister of the Wright brothers. Without Katharine’s contributions, Wilbur and Orville may not have invented the airplane when they did, forever altering the timeline of aviation history.

Tracey also shares her journey from nurse to novelist and tells us about her other works, including:

  • The Engineer’s Wife — the story of Emily Roebling, who oversaw the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge.
  • The War Nurse — the story of Julia Stimson, who led 65 American nurses to the front lines of WWI.
  • The President’s Wife (about Edith Wilson) — America’s first de facto woman president.
  • Homefront Cooking — a collection of recipes and wisdom from American veterans and their families, with proceeds donated to veterans’ organizations.
  • Life Hacks for Military Spouses — an anthology of stories, advice, and artwork about navigating military life.

Tracey’s passion is uncovering “hidden women in history,” and Katherine’s story is a perfect example.
