Girls in Aviation Day 2023 – Pilot Bingo for the Win!

Thank you to the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Women in Aviation, International and Sun City Aviation Academy for organizing a fabulous 2023 Girls in Aviation Day, and for the opportunity to share our diverse role models throughout aviation history who are represented in books. I’ve been doing events like this for a few years now, and I think I’ve finally cracked the code on how to get participants engaged and involved. We played a little game of Pilot ‘bingo’ which allowed me to share fun facts about twenty-five of our awesome women while the girls scoured book covers for hints about who I might be describing.

To their credit, the girls (and some parents and adult volunteers) were enthusiastic participants and remembered some of the details I shared. Everyone left with a charm bracelet that reads “She believed she could, so she did.” I talk all the time about how there are common themes woven throughout our canon of stories, but I think this idea is fundamental to all of us: anything you hope to achieve starts with the belief that you can do it. The very best part for me was when a few of the girls came over at the end of the event to tell me they loved my game and gave me a hug.

Our girl Maria is eight years old and is already a flight student. She loved playing Pilot Bingo with her very supportive Dad who is nurturing her interest in aviation, and even learning himself. I watched a video of Maria taking off, and I know she’s going to soar in life. Good job Maria (and great job Dad!)
Brittany is going places! She loved playing Pilot Bingo and wants to be a lawyer when she grows up. Who better to mentor her than WAI FLL Chapter board member and aviation lawyer, Erica? This is one girl who believes she can . . . and I’m confident she will!
