ABOUT
Literary Aviatrix
I’m Liz Booker, Literary Aviatrix on social media, YouTube, and podcast where I promote books featuring women in aviation. I am a retired Coast Guard helicopter pilot, aviation human resources manager, and foreign diplomat, and a writer for young adults hoping to inspire the next generation of women in aviation.
The Power of Story...
I believe in the power of story to instruct and inspire, to heal, and to foster feelings of connection and belonging, and I believe in the power of our collective stories to influence the demographics in aviation.
Website
The Literary Aviatrix website serves as a central source to search and find over 600 books that feature women in aviation and space. There is something for everyone, and each reader will discover their own messages and themes woven throughout. You will be inspired by the tenacity, adventure, and courage of the people and characters featured in these books and you will learn about various career paths in aviation.
If you encountered obstacles along your own path, you will discover you’re not alone, and you’ll gather the skills to navigate those obstacles—past, present, or future—through the experiences of others. If you’re dedicated to growing diversity in aviation and moving the industry toward gender parity, you will become an informed ally by traveling along the journey of women in aviation through story.
This is an affiliate website. A small portion of the proceeds from purchases made through book links go toward Literary Aviatrix at no additional cost to you.
Book Club
I curate a monthly reading list for virtual discussions throughout the year with a diverse selection of genres, historical periods, and aviation experiences so everyone will find something of interest. We typically have two small group discussions each month, and authors frequently join in.
These discussions include participants from around the world, and the stories serve as an icebreaker for us to share our own diverse experiences. Everyone is welcome and anyone can host a discussion when it’s convenient for you. I’d love to team up with your local book club or aviation chapter for a discussion.
Author Interviews
n my author interview series, I feature writers whose work features women in aviation. The range of topics include the diversity reflected in our canon – everything from historical research of our pioneers, to thriller fiction and romance, to memoirs written by military and civilian pilots. These discussions complement the engagement in reading and discussing our stories, but can also serve as stand-alone introductions to the collective experiences of women aviation. If you’re short on time, you can enjoy 5-10-minute excerpts in my Waypoints podcasts.
Writers’ Room
The Aviatrix Writers want to inspire other women in aviation to share their stories. In my author interviews, we spend a portion talking about their writing and publishing journeys, and I interview other experts in the publishing industry to provide resources and guidance so you can make informed decisions about how best to share your story. If you’re short on time, you can enjoy 5-10-minute excerpts in my Authors Notes podcasts.
In-person Events
After years of planning and executing military exercises and operations – both small and local and large and multinational – and coordinating and emceeing a multitude of military honors and ceremonies, as humble as individual reenlistments or as grand as major joint change of command ceremonies, I discovered I love planning an event, especially one in which we can celebrate an accomplishment, inspire others or be inspired ourselves, and be elevated by our community and network. As a senior defense official, I also became pretty good at VIP itineraries and travel, and had a fantastic time escorting the U.S. Ambassador on her rounds of our seven Eastern Caribbean partner nations.
It’s been great fun to bring these skills to our author community by planning book launch events, author book tours and signings, and a very successful author reading and reception at the Women in Aviation International annual conference.
As a writer for young adults, I’m especially thrilled when I can interact with my target audience, the future of aviation. I bring the STEAM to aviation youth outreach events in South Florida by complementing our STEM focus with books and literacy.
